All of Osanna Visconti’s creations are fused in natural bronze using the lost-wax casting method. This ancient technique works with a negative form in which molten metal is cast. Osanna kneads and shapes her initial wax sculpture by hand. As the defining element of her creations, the wax model is used to create a plaster mould. During the drying phase in kilns heated to 650°C, the wax is melted and drained away, leaving behind the negative form for the casting of bronze in the art foundry.

“It’s very difficult to find young people who have the passion to learn this manual job. I hope that tomorrow’s youth will appreciate the beauty in being an artisan.”

Italian designer and maker, Osanna Visconti, casts exquisitely detailed jewellery and objects, both functional and decorative, from natural bronze using the lost wax technique – an ancient method that Greek and Roman artisans have been using since bronze was discovered 3000 years ago. Osanna shares with Cabana Magazine her love of historic buildings, collecting and artisanship, and discusses her hopes for the future of her craft.

Cast-Bronze Furnishings

"The power and mutability of bronze emits a constant energy to create new forms."

Furnishings and objects made entirely by hand in Natural Bronze using the lost-wax casting technique. Pieces that are one-of-a-kind, just like the forms found in nature from which they are inspired. Meticulous strokes that are true to life, dynamic textures and sinuous contours fused in perfect synergy and eloquence.

Osanna's collections of cast-bronze furniture and interior decor take their inspiration from forms found in nature. All of her creations are fused in bronze using the lost-wax casting process, one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques dating back 6,000 years. This ancient process uses a negative form in which molten metal is cast. An initial wax sculpture is used to create a plaster mould. The wax dries away in furnaces at a temperature of 650° C, leaving the negative it has etched out to be filled with liquid bronze for casting. The wax model, which Osanna sculpts and shapes by hand, is the defining element of her creations.

Bookshelves and chandeliers formed of bamboo, tables and consoles fused with real leaves, petals and flowers, along with candleholders and tableware that are all entirely made by hand and characterized by her signature textures and organic material. Collecting elements found in nature and transforming them into contemporary and functional art is Osanna’s passion.
